I’ve been wanting to make an altered journal for awhile now, and I’ve found the perfect book!

It’s a hardback copy of a John Grisham novel…

in German.

It’s so effing cool. It even has little footnotes explaining the Americanisms (which I…neglected to get a picture of, whoops).

The best part is that I found it at my local Goodwill for a grand total of $1. It’s one of my best Goodwill finds – right up there with the Saturday Night Fever t-shirt and the Slimnastics record (because those things are essentials…yes).

Right now I’m in the process of gluing every second page together so they’re all sturdy enough to paint on if I want to. Well, and the book is nearly six hundred pages long and I don’t know that I can fill that many. It’s slow going because the gluing is so incredibly dull that I can only do it for so long before my brain starts to shut down, but I want to get the gross boring part out of the way before I start on the creative part (damn you responsible part of my brain! you never let me have any fun).

Pages will get posted as I do them. Or as I scan them, which, honestly, is more likely.

I think one of the awesome things about having a blog for your crafts is that you can use it to set goals for yourself, and since it’s so public (what with it being on the internet and all) you might actually do them. So this is my current list of crafts I want to learn. I figure if I put this up here then every so often somebody will be all like, “HEY LOSER-FACE DID YOU LEARN HOW TO MAKE SOAP YET?” and I’ll be all, “The name-calling is really unnecessary, but no, I have not. I’ll get on that!” It’s self-improvement through fear of ridicule! Yay!

  • Soap Making
  • I’m constantly stalking the Bath & Beauty boards on Craftster and all the handmade soaps just look so cool. Plus, it’s actually kind of practical – soap is a necessity.

  • Book Binding
  • I absolutely love the look of handmade journals. And I could make art journals that actually lie flat!

  • Crochet
  • I knit (kinda, see below) and I love it, but I really want to learn crochet too. I feel like crochet and knitting both have their strengths and weaknesses and each are better for certain things, so it’s good to know both. Plus, I could make big ol’ cozy afghans! I love those!

  • Sewing
  • I can hand sew and I can reattach a button if one pops off my shirt, but that’s the extent of my sewing abilities. This is a big one for me because I feel like there are just so many things you can do with sewing. Store bought clothes never seem to fit me quite right, so even if I could just learn how to alter stuff? Totally worth it.

  • Embroidery
  • Another desire inspired by Craftster. I’ve seen so many amazing embroidery pieces on there; I’m just itching to try it myself.

  • Silk Screening
  • I haven’t the slightest idea how I would go about learning how to do this (I’d probably have to take a class or something), but I really want to. The printing you get with silk screen looks so clean and professional.

  • Stamp Carving
  • I love stamps and I think it would be awesome to make my own custom ones.

  • Improving My Very Basic Knitting Skills
  • Oh my god, you guys, I’m so bad at it. I can currently knit things that are shaped like rectangles. The most advanced thing I can do is make stripes. I don’t even know how to purl. I may have to break down and take a class because teaching myself is clearly not working.

I think that every couple of months or so I’ll re-post this list and cross off the things that I’ve accomplished and add to it if I think of something else I want to learn. So basically, this project will end when I have learned every craft ever. Wish me luck!
